Gian-Piero Garizio, Stellenbosch, South Africa

This delightful 20th-century oil painting by Italian artist Gian-Piero Garizio (b. 1931) depicts a row of period houses on Dorp Street, Stellenbosch, South Africa. It’s early Autumn, the buildings are radiantly lit, the old oaks a graduation of tones.

Garizio knew this street well as it’s steeped in history. It was once used as a wagon route for transporting goods and the architecture is referred to as Cape Dutch.

It’s easy to imagine the artist working in this shady spot as he tried to capture this extraordinary light-filled vista.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
