German School, Village Scene With Young Couple

German School, Village Scene With Young Couple

This charming turn of the century impressionist oil painting depicts a village scene involving a young couple. He leans forward with his elbows resting on a rustic stone wall as she picks the petals from a daisy. Is this a tale of first love?

This evocative scene has been captured wonderfully via an intelligent composition and a keen observation of light. For instance, note how the wall behind the pair is brightly illuminated whereas the couple are in the shade. This technique brings emphasis to their discussion and creates a richer narrative.

Impressionist paintings such as this were popular in France towards the end of the 19th-century but less common in Germany. The artist here is unknown but they likely trained in Paris and exhibited in Munich.

The painting is housed within a later Montparnasse frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
