German School Landscape With City View & Walkers

German School Landscape With City View & Walkers

An exquisite late 19th-century landscape depicting an extensive view across to a distant City (maybe Munich).

Our viewpoint is an interesting one as we’re standing at the top of hill looking down and then across towards the buildings on the horizon. Several figures are making their way down the hill for a relaxing stroll by the river.

Towards the end of the 19th-century, women were increasingly interested with the outdoors and walking became a popular pastime. You may notice that the lady nearest is wearing a bustle, which helps to date the painting.

This is such a beautiful piece and a window into a time gone by.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
