François Halkett, Self-Portrait

François Halkett, Self-Portrait

This confident self-portrait by François Halkett (1856-1921) captures him in the prime of his life. At 33, he’d won multiple awards, married the beautiful Clémence Dubois and was about to exhibit at the extraordinary World Fair in Paris.

Note the bravado - chest puffed outwards, cigar in hand, all-knowing expression. He had the world at his feet.

The portrait is signed in the lower left and housed within a fine gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
