Hermanus Koekkoek (Follower), Dutch Fishing Boats In Choppy Waters

This fine 20th-century marine scene depicts several vessels sailing under a vast sky at sunset. It’s a romantic portrayal, which alludes to nature’s power over man while simultaneously emphasising its abundant beauty.

The waves part and draw the eye along a rippling channel of light towards a horizon of graduated tints. The sailboats lean like visual markers along either side and provide us with an unbroken moment of sunlit bliss.

The artist was a follower of widely-lauded Dutch painter Hermanus Koekoek (1815-1882) who worked in a manner befitting the great heritage of his nation’s iconic masters.

Monogrammed RC and housed within a decorative foliate frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
