Landscape With Lake & Church

This late 19th-century oil painting by Dutch artist Everhardus Koster (1817-1892) depicts a tranquil lakeside view with sinuous trees and a distant church.

Koster was a master of composition and this skillfully rendered piece draws upon the rich legacy of his artistic forebears while also combining the philosophies of the ‘Hague School’. He produced it during the latter part of his career, probably around the time he moved to The Hague following twenty years working as the curator for the Villa Welgelegen. At this point in his life, he was highly regarded - both by peers and patrons.

The Hague School of artists sought to elevate a view with atmosphere and convey a quality, which extended beyond mere topographic representation. Also referred to as ‘the grey school’, they worked predominantly en plein air and captured the fleeting effects of light with subtle, often moody, tonal shifts. Here, we see Koster paying homage to these ideas, while also drawing upon his seasoned understanding of the old masters.

Note the triangular design with its apex at the highest point of the tree. And the deft handling of shade, which scatters the autumnal bank. There’s also an interesting visual interaction between the illuminated figure and the silhouetted church.

Signed lower left and held within a later frame.
