Ernst Ludwig Von Aster

Autumn Landscape With Crescent Moon

This early-20th-century oil painting by German artist Ernst Ludwig Von Aster (1902-1986) depicts a picturesque autumnal landscape in the forest at Webicht, Weimar.

Ernst Ludwig Von Aster was predominantly known for scenes with animals traditionally associated with hunting. His style was broadly traditional and underpinned by accomplished draughtsmanship. He hailed from the historic mountain town of Goslar and trained in both Weimar and Berlin.

Here, he’s captured a view at Webicht, which was popular for painters due to its seasonal changes, diversity and seclusion.

An atmospheric crescent moon peeks through feathery branches. Beautiful.

Signed in the lower left and framed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
