Traveller At Rest In Rome

This late 19th-century watercolour by Italian artist Edouardo Vitali (XIX) depicts a seated traveller at rest.

Sat before a far-reaching view, a weary gentleman rests upon a stone wall. With a wooden walking stick, ragged coat, and hat, he’s travelled many miles to get here. Beyond him, the iconic skyline of Rome is punctuated by St. Peter's Basilica with other popular sights also visible.

Edouardo Vitali worked predominantly in Rome, capturing candid snapshots of its residents and views. His works serve as a fascinating record of time gone by and were probably sold in local galleries.

Signed lower right and held within a later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
