Early 20th-Century Portrait Of A Woman In A Brown Top

Early 20th-Century Portrait Of A Woman In A Brown Top

A gentle depiction of a middle-aged woman with a brown v-neck top and necklace. The artist has captured her wistful expression and enigmatic smile beautifully. It’s hard to decipher the signature but it appears to read Ehlers, which could relate to English artist Ernest Herman Ehlers (1858-1943).

The portrait is dated 1931 and housed within a frame that's probably its original.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 21½” x 25½” / 55cm x 65cm
Year of creation: 1931
Provenance: Denmark
Condition: Presentable with one area of restoration. The canvas could be cleaned to restore some vibrancy if desired.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
