Danish School, Pastoral Scene With Shepherdess

Danish School, Pastoral Scene With Shepherdess

A beautiful early 20th-century oil painting depicting a young shepherdess guarding her animals in a coastal landscape. In the foreground, we see the young lady wearing a white dress with a red apron. She’s looking down - away in own her thoughts. While, further back, several sheep and cows are grazing.

The artist has used an impressionistic approach and skillfully applied the oils with plenty of expression. We love the contrast between the young lady in the shadows and the light that floods the background.

The painting is housed within a handmade swept frame and signed illegibly in the lower right.

Overall size: 19” x 15” / 48cm x 38cm
Year of creation: c. 1910

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
