Charles Victor Ensinck, Hague School Landscape With Cottages

Charles Victor Ensinck, Hague School Landscape With Cottages

A beautiful and highly atmospheric Dutch oil painting depicting two buildings within a wooded area.

The artist, Charles Victor Ensinck (1846-1914), was part of a community of artists known collectively as the ‘Hague School’. The group believed in painting exactly what they saw without any sentiment or romantic embellishments. As such, many of their works are quietly sensitive and honest to nature.

In this piece, we particularly love the flash of light as you look through the cottage window.

The painting is signed in the lower right.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
