Bernard de Hoog, The Evening Meal

Bernard de Hoog, The Evening Meal

This heart-warming interior scene by Belgian artist Bernard de Hoog (1867-1943) depicts a young family within a rustic cottage interior. The table is blessed with a divine light as the mother cuts bread for the evening meal. Her son looks upwards with keen anticipation as her baby sleeps in a large wicker crib.

De Hoog has imbued this humble setting with a deep sense of dignity. It’s a sensitive portrayal that’s skilfully rendered. Note how the posture of both the mother and child is suggestive of prayer. Her head is bowed while the son’s hands are clasped.

The artist is sending a message - that despite the lack of means, the sincerest moments arise from love and humility.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
