A wonderful turn of the century impressionistic interior scene by Danish artist, Axel Gøtze. It depicts a beautiful room with a piano, rugs, cabinet and artworks. The light is gently falling through a window and illuminating part of the back wall.
Little is known about Axel Gøtze, which is unusual given his natural ability. Note the way he’s created the pattern on the rugs with little more than some well-judged daubs.
It’s also interesting that the paintings appear to be frameless canvases with the one in the top right being rough around the edges. Perhaps this could be the artist’s home and the paintings are his? We shall never know but it’s a very intriguing little piece.
Signed/dated in the lower right and housed within a period frame that could be its original.
