Axel Bredsdorff, Interior With Mother & Child

Axel Bredsdorff, Interior With Mother & Child

This gentle interior scene by Danish artist Axel Bredsdorff (1883-1947) depicts a child looking out towards a snow-covered garden while his mother watches on. An empty bowl rests on the kitchen table as early morning light cascades through a window.

The beauty of interior scenes is their ability to spark the imagination and conjure up a story. If you give a scene time, the mind will naturally wander as we consider who the people are and how they’re connected. How do you read this piece? Why is he looking outside? How is she reacting?

Perhaps the young lad is looking towards his father - it’s finally time to go sledging. With a sense of excitement, he’s eagerly waiting as Dad drags the sledge from the family outbuilding. The mother looks over towards her animated child. He’s rushed his breakfast but it’s no surprise!

The painting is signed and housed within a period frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
