Anthony Vandyke Copley Fielding, Landscape With Figures

Anthony Vandyke Copley Fielding, Landscape With Figures

This charming 19th-century landscape by Anthony Vandyke Copley Fielding (1787-1855) depicts a British rural idyll. It’s carefully observed and rendered by an artist with a deep admiration for the natural world.

Late Summer sun radiates behind a dense copse while a mother and child rest in a nearby field. The foliage a mixture of sun-blushed tones, while the sky brings a spacious relief. It’s a composition of contrasting quarters - the bottom right dense, the top left, airy and light.

Fielding probably sketched this view while enjoying the surroundings. He was an ever-popular Victorian painter who worked throughout the British Isles.

The reverse bears an old Christie’s stencil.

Inscribed on the reverse and dated.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
