Albert Leopold Rheinemann, Extensive Coastal Scene With Cottages

Albert Leopold Rheinemann, Extensive Coastal Scene With Cottages

This peaceful 19th-century landscape painting by German artist Albert Leopold Rheinemann (1833-1879) depicts a coastal scene with moored fishing vessels and cottages. It evokes the tranquillity of a day resting by the shore.

In the foreground, a woman is standing by a small boat as she chats to a fisherman. Perhaps he’s just returned after a morning at sea. Behind them, the smoke from a cottage rises skyward, its orange roof creating an accent in the view.

Rheinemann trained under the Norwegian artist, Hans Fredrik Gude (1825-1903), who was a master of coastal landscapes. Gude’s work is similar but often imbued with a sense of romantic embellishment. Here, the teacher’s style is evident, yet Rheinemann has avoided romance in favour of simple reality.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
