Aage Rasmussen, Queen Louise’s Bridge, Copenhagen

Aage Rasmussen, Queen Louise’s Bridge, Copenhagen

This vivid early 20th-century oil painting depicts a view along Dronning Louise Bro (Queen Louise's Bridge) in Copenhagen. It’s teeming with fashionable pedestrians dressed in the latest garb. On the left, we see a florist offering flowers to an interested customer. At his feet, various bunches rest in buckets - a bright array of pinks, yellows, whites and purples. While on the right, a lady with a cloche hat is cycling past a road sweeper. The bridge remains popular with cyclists today.

But perhaps the most striking inclusion is the bold pop of red radiating from the lady in the foreground. Its conspicuous boldness draws the eye and seems to hold the piece together.

Monogrammed in the lower right and housed within a gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
