19th-Century Swedish School, Portrait Of A Gentleman

19th-Century Swedish School, Portrait Of A Gentleman

A fine mid-19th-century portrait of a dapper gentleman wearing a black coat, white shirt with upstanding collars, and a large black bow tie. His hair is slightly dishevelled as per the fashion of the day and he’s dressed to impress.

The portrait is unsigned but clearly by a well-trained hand. It’s housed within a later gilded frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 19” x 21½” / 48cm x 55cm
Year of creation: c. 1851
Provenance: Sweden
Condition: Fine craquelure in areas but the paint layer is stable. Areas of thin paint possibly due to previous over-cleaning. Frame with some light wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
