19th-Century Swedish School Landscape With Cottages

19th-Century Swedish School Landscape With Cottages

A charming 19th-century Swedish school painting depicting a rural scene with a country track and cottages. It’s a beautiful piece that feels inspired by British landscapes from the same period.

We discovered it in Sweden but it’s possible that it could be of British origin. However, the thatched cottages are in a slightly unusual vernacular style - one with a tall brick doorway - hence the attribution.

The painting is held within a 19th-century gilt frame and possibly bears a partial signature in the lower right.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
