19th-Century River Landscape With Sunset

19th-Century River Landscape With Sunset

An atmospheric late 19th-century river landscape depicting a figure punting under the evening’s sun. It’s been painted with beautiful impressionistic marks and it probably originated on the continent. We particularly love the dog, which is sitting patiently as its master takes them back home.

The painting is signed in the lower right. Perhaps ‘Willenuor’ or similar.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 36” x 22” / 92cm x 56cm
Year of creation: c. 1890
Provenance: England (but probably continental)
Condition: Very presentable. Craquelure but the paint layer is stable. Canvas relined.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
