19th-Century Portrait Of An Officer In Uniform

19th-Century Portrait Of An Officer In Uniform

A fine late 19th-century portrait of a dashing young German officer in his parade uniform. It’s a sensitive portrayal, which is quite unusual for a military piece.

The officer’s hair is slicked back, probably with pomade, which was all the rage in Germany at the time.

The painting is housed within what appears to be its original frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
