This charming mid-19th-century oil painting depicts a gentleman wearing a white shirt with a black coat and necktie. His collars are turned down and his hair is styled with a side parting.
In the 1840s/50s, men tended to wear their hair covering the top of the ears, which was often accompanied by side-whiskers and moustaches. Here, the young gentleman sports a beard akin to a modern-day chinstrap. Quite a dapper characteristic.
The portrait is signed/dated and housed within a gilt frame.
