19th-Century German School, Maid Secretly Drinking Champers

19th-Century German School, Maid Secretly Drinking Champers

This 19th-century German oil painting depicts a young maid surreptitiously supping champers after clearing away her lady’s meal. Head tilted back, she’s making the most of every drop.

It makes you wonder how often this kind of thing went on within the palatial homes of the landed gentry. I think we can all agree that we’d do exactly the same thing in her situation.

The painting is signed illegibly, inscribed ‘Munich’, and housed within a good period frame.

Medium: Oil on panel
Overall size: 16” x 18½” / 41cm x 47cm
Year of creation: c. 1877
Condition: Overall very presentable. Frame with some age-related wear.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
