19th-Century German School, Classical Landscape With Ruins

This late 19th-century German school oil painting depicts two figures walking home immersed in the rich orange hue of the evening sun. Two twisting pines create strong verticals and guide the eye toward the horizon. An ancient ruin creates a conspicuous focal point.

Stylistically, the landscape draws upon the classical masters of the 17th-century. The distant horizon glows, as if touched by fire, while the foreground rests in the shade. It’s plausible that the view was a merging of reality and the artist’s own romantic ideation.

Signed illegibly, dated, and housed within a fine 19th-century frame with extensive corner ornamentation.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
