19th-Century French School, Portrait Of A Boy

19th-Century French School, Portrait Of A Boy

A charming early to mid-19th-century portrait of a boy wearing a tan outfit with a white shirt. It’s unsigned but clearly by a well-trained hand.

We particularly love his little coat and pushed-over fringe.

The portrait is housed within a period frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 16” x 19” / 41cm x 49cm
Year of creation: c. 1840
Provenance: France
Condition: Craquelure throughout but the paint layer is stable. Several scratches. One patched repair. Old wormholes in the stretcher. Frame a little tatty with wear, scuffs and abrasions.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
