Henriette Desportes

La Couture

An evocative interior scene depicting a lady sewing by French painter, Henriette Desportes (1877-1951).

She looks down, lost in her thoughts, as a light breeze gently shifts the voile. It’s a warm Summer’s afternoon and the garden is radiant with an abundance of flora.

The quiet atmosphere of this peaceful moment is communicated through Desportes’ expressive brushwork and her skilful use of colour. It’s a painting that gives you so much when you spend a few minutes simply taking it all in.

Desportes hailed from Paris and trained under Marcel André Baschet and François Schommer. She exhibited at various salons during her lifetime and won at least two medals.

The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within a later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
