Auguste Braekevelt

Still Life With Fruit, Bowl & Jug

A luscious 19th-century still life with apples, pears, pot and plate by Belgian artist, Auguste Braekevelt (1832-1908).

The level of detail here is astonishing and the fruit appears lifelike - good enough to eat.

Braekevelt was a painter and sculptor that trained under Égide Hyacinthe Mélot (1817-1885). Undoubtedly, his experience of working in three dimensions as a sculptor helped him to capture light with a high degree of understanding. Note how the light falls on the apples in the foreground - quite sublime.

The painting is signed and housed within a Montparnasse frame that’s probably its original.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
