Misty Upland Landscape With Stream

This late 19th-century oil painting by British artist Henry W Henley (fl.1871-1895) depicts an upland landscape with a winding stream.

Henry W Henley was a notable landscape painter known predominantly for his works in oil. His often dramatic upland views frequently captured the majestic scenery of North Wales and the Scottish Highlands. Welsh rivers, such as the picturesque banks of the Conwy, were a particular inspiration. As were the misty lochs and fens of Inverness-shire.

Here, the view feels reminiscent of the rugged Highlands where the mists clutch the mountains and the streams dart rapidly across exposed stone.

Signed in the lower right and held within a later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
