Wiedh Anshelm, Coastal View

Wiedh Anshelm, Coastal View

This 20th-century oil painting by Swedish artist, Wiedh Anshelm (b. 1897) captures the unlikely beauty of an overcast coastal sky. It’s a celebration of tranquillity - a moment of calm amid muted tones.

The water is aglow, gentle ripples illuminated by an ounce of breaking sun from behind a cloud. While intelligent horizontal marks increase in lightness as they multiply towards the horizon. They culminate in bright white.

There’s nothing here - the sea is almost motionless.

The painting is signed in the lower left and housed within a later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
