German School, Portrait Of A Gentleman With A Pipe

German School, Portrait Of A Gentleman With A Pipe

A characterful early 20th-century portrait of a man smoking a pipe. He sports a carefully coiffured moustache and beard.

The style is quite informal so perhaps this is a self-portrait or another creative that the artist knew. Interestingly, there’s a study on the reverse.

The portrait is housed within a good later frame.

Medium: Oil on board
Overall size: 12½” x 15” / 32cm x 39cm
Year of creation: c. 1920
Provenance: Germany
Condition: Good. One minor loss towards the bottom but it seems to all blend in.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
