Early 20th-Century German School, Portrait Of A Lady

Early 20th-Century German School, Portrait Of A Lady

This early 20th-century portrait depicts a lady with a relaxed posture and a knowing look. It’s a sensitive portrayal and it’s plausible that the artist knew the subject.

Around her waist, she wears an interesting hexagonal buckle, which is reminiscent of the art and the crafts movement.

Monogrammed ‘CW’ and dated 1911.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Overall size: 31½” x 38” / 80cm x 96cm
Year of creation: 1911
Condition: Artwork presents well. A few scuffs and abrasions but nothing that detracts in our opinion.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
