Reserved - Vitus Reisacher, Portrait Of A Gentleman

A late 19th-century portrait of a gentleman by German artist, Vitus Reisacher (1851-1913).

Reisacher was an interesting artist as he also trained in photography and had a studio in Munich. It seems that he specialised in wedding portraits and would paint (or photograph) couples prior to their nuptials.

This could explain why the gentleman here is looking directly at us with his body square on to the easel. It’s possible that the painting was based on or over an earlier photograph rather than painted from life.

He certainly has a look to him.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
