19th-Century Portrait Of A Young Gentleman

19th-Century Portrait Of A Young Gentleman

A charming mid-19th-century portrait of a young gentleman wearing a black coat, white shirt and black necktie. In the 1860s, gentleman often styled their hair into a moderate wave and kept their side whiskers long. As you can see here, this dapper young gentleman is keeping up with the latest fashion.

It’s also interesting to note the books on the table to his left. These are probably a reference to his academic prowess.

The portrait is housed within a later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
