White RBA RI, John (1851-1933)

John White RBA RI was an accomplished British painter of landscapes, portraits, genre scenes and coastal views. Born in Edinburgh, he spent several years in Australia before returning and enrolling at Royal Scottish Academy Schools. His works were shown at major exhibitions including the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists where he was a member.

Married Emma Homewood Sanders. The pair would have four children.

1880

Elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists.

Lived in Shere, Surrey.
Reviewed in the Manchester Courier following an exhibition at The Society of British Artists.

“…among the outdoor paintings Mr. John White (member) sends a charming autumn bit of grey sky, bare trees and cottage, where a flaxen-haired laddie throws ‘crumbs’ (425) to the little birds. The same artist contributes another small canvas of a ‘picturesque hillside garden’ (113), besides his larger work illustrative of the lines -

At length his lonely cot appears in view
Beneath the shelter of an aged tree;
The expectant wee things todlin stacher thro'
To meet their dad wi' flichterin noise and glee.”

Elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.

1886

Elected a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

1888

Married Rosetta Maud Higgins in Devon. The pair would have seven children.

1891

Lived in Branscombe, Devon.

1901

Lived in Branscombe, Devon.

1911

Lived in Exeter, Devon.

1933

Died.
