William Miller Frazer, Hickling Broad, Norfolk

William Miller Frazer, Hickling Broad, Norfolk

This beautiful 20th-century oil on canvas by Scottish artist William Miller Frazer (1864-1961) depicts a sun setting across Hickling Broad in Norfolk. Its warm graduated tints shift from yellow to ochre - its fire dramatised with impasto. Note the daubs on the water to suggest reflections. Quickly added to capture a feeling, an absorbing moment in a tranquil setting. The style is reminiscent of the Impressionists.

Frazer trained at the Royal Scottish Academy and remains its longest consecutive exhibitor. His works are held in major galleries across Scotland.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
