This beautiful portrait by British artist William Drummond (act.1800-1860) depicts two sisters within an interior. It’s a charming glimpse into the lives of these young women.

Dressed in the latest fashions of the mid to late 1840s, with hair patiently styled into side coils, they hold a loving pose. The seated sister rests her right arm on a side table and holds a sketchbook on her lap. It appears to display a coastal scene in watercolour - perhaps she’s a keen artist. It’s tempting to wonder whether she added any embellishments to the colouring.

Signed/dated in the lower left.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
