This early 19th-century portrait by Wilhelm Gottfried Bauer (1790-1853) depicts a dashing young gentleman wearing a luxurious black coat, probably a dress coat, along with a cravat and pin. He’s been described as roguish by several viewers but we can’t possibly comment on his character…

The portrait shows signs of each age but generally presents better than the photos would suggest. Ideal for those looking for a ‘lost in time’ country house piece.
