Performance At The Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice

This fine 20th-century etching by British artist Wilfred Fairclough (1907-1996) depicts an orchestra Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice. It’s rendered with great attention to detail and captures the musicians in full swing.

Fairclough’s etchings are regarded by many to be leading examples of superior work in monochrome. Note the wide range of tones from the blacks through to the highlights. He’s working hard to provide interest through minute adjustments to the plate.

Fairclough trained at the Royal College of Art and later received the prestigious ‘Rome Scholarship’ in Engraving. He often returned to the subject of performance for inspiration and enjoyed depicting musicians. Many of his later works were based upon earlier drawings undertaken during his travels through Italy.

Signed, framed and glazed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
