This early 20th-century oil painting by German artist Viggo Langer (1860-1942) depicts a radiant landscape with a pond, cottage and girl.
The hazy semi-circular form of a tinted copse casts its reflection across a flickering pond. The water appears magical as if we’ve wandered into a Utopian vision. A blond girl meanders along a countryside track - deftly applied highlights indicate footprints. The tremulous grasses are dotted with flora.
Langer was single-minded. He trained formally at the Danish Academy but pursued the looser style of impressionism shortly after leaving. Light was his mistress and he courted her across the continent - from the ebullience of Sicily to the enchanting boulevards of Paris. Here, in this joyous piece from 1909, he celebrates the incandescence of mid-Summer.

Viggo Langer was an accomplished German painter predominantly known for his spirited impressionistic depictions of picturesque Danish views. He trained in Copenhagen at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and later with Carl Bloch (1884-85). His works are often characterised by a sense of uplifting freedom, space, and warm Summer conditions. He's represented in numerous public collections.
