Victor Simonin

Vase de Fleurs

This early to mid-20th-century oil painting by Belgian artist Victor Simonin (1877-1946) depicts a vase of red and pink flowers.

Described as a “tender bohemian”, Simonin was predominantly known for his spirited landscapes and stills. Hailing from Ixelles, his legacy is one of vibrant arrangements underpinned by intelligent compositions - both expressive and respectful of tradition.

He trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and under several masters including the post-impressionist Alfred Bastien (1873-1955), although rarely exhibited through choice. He was also an accomplished violinist until suffering a hand injury.

Simonin achieves so much with just a few deft marks.
