Valdemar Magaard, The Empty Ol’ Mug

Valdemar Magaard, The Empty Ol’ Mug

A charming early 20th-century interior scene depicting an old gentleman staring woefully into an empty mug. While an older lady, presumably his wife, is holding a bowl of food (perhaps nuts).

Magaard had a skill for capturing figures within interesting interiors. He deftly uses the effects of light to capture the imagination and his works often pose more questions than they answer.

The painting is signed/dated in the lower left and housed within a gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
