Making The Bed

Valdemar Magaard

Making The Bed

This early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Valdemar Magaard (1864-1937) depicts an interior with a woman making the bed.

Simple wooden furniture in abraded red paint, a single throw for comfort, a well-made bed and two inconspicuous plants to decorate the window sill. Magaard was a master of the humble interior. Elevating the ordinary with light effects and composition.

A glimpse of a radiant garden through the sunlit window connects the outside world. Yet the comfort of this quiet retreat appeals to the heart. It’s most probably his own home, he painted these rooms often. His wife, Annie Magaard (b.1860), is possibly depicted here.

Signed/dated and held within a 20th-century gilt frame.
