Valdemar Magaard

Interior With Mother & Child

This charming early 20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Valdemar Magaard (1864-1937) depicts a mother and child within a rustic stone cottage.

Reaching down, she ties her daughter’s bonnet. Both are wearing their Sunday best. Perhaps it’s morning and they’re heading to church. It’s a gentle moment captured with sensitivity.

Magaard was a master of such scenes and a champion of wholesome family values. His beautifully composed works are a window into a romantic ideology and a tonic for his city-dwelling patrons. The cat’s expression says it all.

Monogrammed and held within a gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
