Valdemar Maegaard, Interior Scene With Woman By Window

Valdemar Maegaard, Interior Scene With Woman By Window

An unusual late 19th-century interior scene depicting a woman standing by a window by Danish artist, Valdemar Magaard (1864-1937). The room appears dark and she’s gently lit by the daylight - perhaps she’s waiting for someone to return.

Magaard had a skill for capturing figures within dark atmospheric interiors. He deftly uses the effects of light to capture the imagination and his works pose more questions than they answer.

We love this piece for its mood and stillness. It’s quietly reflective and beautifully painted.

The painting is signed and housed within a period frame that probably its original.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
