Thomas Pyne, Summer Landscape With Sheep

Thomas Pyne, Summer Landscape With Sheep

This picturesque 19th-century landscape painting by British artist Thomas Pyne (1843–1935) depicts an attractive view across a woodland clearing towards distant hills. It evokes the quiet tranquillity of a warm Summer’s day.

Pyne has selected a composition that carries interest by virtue of a row of diagonal trees. Descending in height, they guide the eye towards a horizon rendered in near-violet tones. And if we explore the clearing further, several sheep wander and graze - nicely rendered with weight and realism.

Signed/dated in the lower left and framed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
