Coastal Scene With Sailboats

This charming early 20th-century watercolour by British artist Thomas Mortimer (act. 1880-1920) depicts a tranquil coastal scene with sailboats.

Mortimer adored the British coastline and held a particular fondness for Devon and Cornwall. His gentle views capture quieter ideals. Sundrenched shores, calm waters, restful moods. It’s plausible that he occasionally sketched while at sea.

St Ives and Newlyn were popular haunts, as they were for so many. One can imagine him up at first light and retiring to a welcoming pub in the evening. He also travelled to the continent undertaking tours of Holland, France and Venice.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
