Upland Landscape With Track

This late 19th-century watercolour by British artist Thomas Medcalf (1848-1901) depicts a rugged landscape with track.

Ascending beyond view, the mountainous terrain is punctuated by spindly trees as the flora climbs over a craggy facade. While the distant wood, captured in a blue haze, feels Turner-esque as it slopes to the left. A winding track bends into the distance.

Discovered in an antique shop, this little gem sat quietly amid porcelain and ephemera. Medcalf is predominantly lost to time but thankfully rediscovered.

Signed lower right and held in a later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
