The Road To Calvary

The Road To Calvary

A small early 19th-century oil on canvas depicting Christ carrying the cross as he trudges towards Calvary. He’s flanked by soldiers as two dogs bark fiercely at a bare-chested man holding the rope that binds him. This may be Simon of Cyrene who was recruited from the crowd.

The painting is signed illegibly in the lower right and dated 1833.

Oil on canvas
9½” x 11⅔” / 24cm x 30cm
Year of creation
c. 1833
The years have taken their toll. Craquelure throughout and several areas of significant paint loss particularly towards the top.
