Swedish School Nocturne With Sailboats

Swedish School Nocturne With Sailboats

A beautiful early 20th-century Swedish nocturne with numerous sailboats and a steamboat. Two-thirds of the composition is comprised of a cloudy sky with a partially obscured moon. While on the right, the coastline draws your eye out towards a distant rocky view.

Nocturnes always seem to capture the imagination with their dramatic skies and evocative moonlit scenery.

On the reverse, an inscription refers to when the artwork changed hands in the Summer of 1969.

The painting is held within a period gilt frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
