Søren Christian Bjulf, A Fisherman

Søren Christian Bjulf, A Fisherman

Here, sat resting on a covered boat, a middle-aged fisherman squints against the glare of the sun. A pipe lit - arms folded, an unlikely model. Behind him, several vessels are a flash of white marks, their red sails cutting through a light blue sky. It’s Summer in Copenhagen and Bjulf is right at home.

This colourful portrait of a fisherman was possibly painted at Gammel Strand, which the artist knew well. His father was a fishmonger and probably frequented the market here. Bjulf seemed to have an obsession with this area and also painted the ‘Skovser Women’ who sold their wares in the square.

The painting is housed within a period frame and signed.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also often restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
